In considering a move to island living one surely must give some thought to health service coverage. Do you have special health needs, if so will they be catered for?

Whilst Orkney Mainland does have hospital and several Doctors Surgeries, not every island has a full time doctor. Some of the islands have surgeries and visiting doctors. Most have district nurses to provide ongoing care and emergency treatment where appropriate.

If you are considering moving to one of the smaller islands it may be worth contacting their local surgery to confirm what cover they provide.

NHS Orkney have web site detailing the various services they provide at www.ohb.scot.nhs.uk
