At one point there was a flash and a bang which was seen by both myself in my officeand Marlene who was busy in the kitchen at the time. The lights dipped and my PC went off which I thought nothing of at the time. I was busy doing something else and as I'm not prone to panic, thought nothing of it.
When I'd finished doing what I was doing I went to turn my PC back on, nothing! Oh dear dead PC. I checked the power cable as the monitorwas still powering up. Nope, not the cable, electric all the way to the PC. But the PC was completely dead, no noise, no lights nothing! Just great. Thank goodness I have a robust backup system. Carbonite offers unlimited online backup for your small business for only $49.95/year. Try it free! I rang my insurers straight away and told them what had happened and they said that they would need to confirm the adverse weather conditions, but meanwhile someone would be in touch within the next 24 hours to discuss a suitable replacement. Result! that's what insurance is for. Shortly thereafter the telephones went down! We could ring each other on the island but any attempts at calls off island returned an engaged tone (turns out that people trying to ring a number on the island got the same result). Of course that meant no Internet either. So, peace and quiet. Although I must confess I hadn't expected the phones to remain out of action till Monday! Sometime Saturday the electric started going off for ever increasing periods until at around 18:00 it went off and stayed off for the rest of the evening. Time to sit by the fire and break out the candles. Quite a cosy evening. The power was pretty much back to normal on Sunday with just occasional dips/outages but, as already mentioned, the phones weren't sorted till Monday lunch time. |
