Turns out the mobile had somehow "locked up", it was o.k. once it had been switched off and back on again. We would later be cursing that b*&$%y mobile!

They feared that he might have feline aids and wanted to do some blood tests but needed out permission to do so, costs etc.

So we said yes take the blood now. Then away we went to the ferry.

When we got home there was a message on our answerphone to ring the vets, ominous. We rang but of course by now it was turned six in the evening and so there was no answer.

We rang first thing in the morning only to be told our worst fears Nelson did indeed have feline aids, there was no cure, he didn't have long to live and he would just get worse. At this point there was only one decision to be made and that was to euthanize.

But by now we had missed Tuesdays ferry so we couldn't get back to the vets until Wednesday.

Can you imagine how long Tuesday was knowing the plans for Wednesday?

So Wednesday he was taken to the vets and put to sleep very peacefully and caringly. Although there were a few wet eyes about I can tell you!

If only that blumming phone had been working on Monday! We would have been contacted on the day, had the blood test on the day and made the decision on the day. Some how taking a pet to the vets to be made better, finding out that it can't be and losing it that way wouldn't have seemd so bad.

Spending the whole day looking at Nelson knowing where we were taking him the following day was very harrowing to say the least.

In hindsight, and looking at pictures of him taken over the last year, he had been ill for quite some time.

Definitely the right decision, just wish it could have been carried out quicker.

Horrid week......

Orkney ferry service is not good, too inconvenient for people and animals.

I can sympathise with you totally. We have just lost our burmese x 20 month old cat Oscar, he was tested for felv on the 24th Dec, it turned out negative, Oscar died on the 29th Dec, his legs went, he could not eat or drink, we don't fully know what happened to Oscar, but he did have the cat flu before we adopted him from the CPL at Stenness as a 12 wks old kitten. He had to be put down on the 29th.
