Big clean up Print E-mail

Today we sorted out the garage, since starting work on the middle extension the garage had become the local dumping ground for anything that didn't have a home.

We were ruthless and had a big bonfire, I did feel like a murderer though, I came across a bin bag full of teddies and cuddly toys which had gotten wet and mouldy, so onto the bonfire! I felt awful and really sad but not the only one. Hubby said to son just throw them on and don't look back!

It's a job well done everywhere's clean and tidy again and no more obstacle course to get out.

The wood has now arrived so hubby and son can now crack on with renovating the middle extension, we are turning it into a workshop as it is straight off the garage.  It means in winter we will not have to brave the elements to get a tool or whatever is needed, and there are times when it has been so windy and wild we could not even open the garage doors and Phill is no weakling!

We can only do the back end at the moment as we have a blackbird in residence in the front near the door that is sitting on her eggs, she is fine and doesn't seem to mind all the comings and goings she knows us now as this is her second lot of eggs. The first lot has hatched and fledged and she's back for another go, she's one busy bird!

Lovely morning so had my breakfast in the garden room and watched a sailing boat in the bay, what a nice way to start my day.

Decided that today is the day for digging up some of my new potatoes to have with our dinner, big disappointment! hardly a handful out of the tub. So had to empty a second tub, more in this one but most are very small. Maybe we should not have been so impatient.

I moved onto my cuttings of various shrubs I had taken last year.  I decided where to plant them out and got my son to dig the holes for them, holes dug plants put in and watered job done.

They will not get bigger than the fence as the salt does for them, but at least they get plenty of flowers on them.

I have planted Lavertera and Buddlias, purple Buddlias as well as the yellow pom pom variety, all three of these do very well here as I did the same cuttings the year before and they have come back quite well.

Having planted these out it means I now have room for new cuttings, so got myself a lot of Sycamore branches.

You may have guessed I like doing cuttings its plants for free!

Blackbird Chicks 2 Print E-mail

blackbirdchicks2What a difference a few days makes!

The blackbird chicks in our garden room are on the verge of fledging now, hopping around and stretching their wings, with the occasional short flutter from to branch on the grape vine.

All four look to have survived o.k. so we're happy.

Trees in Orkney... Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 May 2010 00:00

One of the very few things that I miss from "down south" is trees. Although there are trees in Orkney, there aren't many.

That might be about to change thanks to funding from the Forestry Commissions 'Forests for People' challenge fund as they have awarded £52,500 the Orkney Islands Council and the Orkney Woodland Group.

Together with funding from the Orkney Island Council and the Scottish Natural Heritage this will enable the project to continue its woodland project over the next three years.
