New Cooker Print E-mail

I said in my last entry that the Rayburn had to go.

The Fuel Poverty project won't cover the the cost of replacing the "cooker" but rather intended to just diconnect it from the central heating and leave it for use as a cooker.

cookerHowever even in summer when the central heating is not used so much, the cooker is still on 24 hours a day and still uses a scary amount of oil.

Like I said it had to go.

We bought a gas cooker on the Internet, amazing prices when you shop around. So, we installed the new cooker at the beginning of November and the Rayburn is now disconnected and dead. It just needs removing now which given their weight will be a bit of a challenge.

Marlene loved the Rayburn for cooking on but has to admit the turn on and offability of the gas cooker is the business. And of course it is only on when we need it. How radical is that!

That said now that the Rayburn is off, it is apparent just how much heat it was providing for the kitchen. Having said that we, don't live in the kitchen.

Fuel Poverty! Print E-mail

Westray is very active in the promotion and use of green energy, with several local people really driving forward intiatives to use wind power, bio-diesel, etc.

It is a goal of the the Westray Development Trust and Energy Action Westray to make Westray entirely self sufficient in energy by 2012.

You can find out more about the various projects and initatives at the Energy Action Westray website.

One of the initiatives being driven by Energy Action Westray is the surveying of all properties on Westray to provide help and advice on energy saving. They are also endeavouring to banish fuel poverty from Westray.

Fuel Poverty is the unfortunate term that the government has given to households where the cost of providing an adequate standard of warmth is more than 10% of the household income.

Now, given the constant rising cost of energy these days I imagine that it is not too difficult to fall into that category anywhere in the country.

With the lower levels of income in some of the remoter areas of the country, like say Orkney outer isles, it is even more prevalent.

So, long story short we're in Fuel Poverty!!! Poor us!

Rain, rain. rain, rain! Print E-mail
Saturday, 29 August 2009 06:14

In an earlier post I had boasted about what a magnificent summer we were having and how we really could do with some rain.

Well my wish was granted. Boy have we had some rain over the last couple of days!

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I hear the first person complaining about no summer and awful weather. How quick we forget.

It's been a cracker of a summer in Westray this year and I'm sure we still have some more fine days to come.

We desperately needed the rain anyway so its all good!
