Well that may be counting our chickens, but the weather is definitely on the turn.
The last two days have been corkers, we even had our first barbi. Having said that we are barbeque fanatics, first sign of a fine day and it's out with the barbi! Perhaps a hang over from our time in South Africa.
The daffodils are in bud, the crocuses are in flower and the Lavateria that we planted next to the garden wall even looks to have survived. So we're happy bunnies. |

Well the snow has nearly all gone here in Westray, but it was nice while it lasted. Everything always looks so nice with a fresh fall of snow, a great leveler even a scruffy garden looks nice after snow. We had a ride around our little island and got some nice snowy scenes photo's, it's at times like these I wish that I was more able bodied. It would be great to get wrapped up warm and go for a long walk, Westray is great for walkers no big hills and beautiful scenery and wildlife. Wednesday saw us in Kirkwall for the day, we also had a good drive around Mainland looking at the snowy hills. We then treat ourselves to fish chips tea bread and butter, before the ferry home. |

Just before christmas we had another new feral kitten turn up, probably about seven eight weeks old. After several weeks of coaxing with tasty morsels of meat, the kitten started to let me stroke and fuss it. Lots of stroking and fussing later I was able to actually pick it up, on closer inspection I was able to determine that she was a little girl. I started to leave the porch window open and encouraged her to come into the porch. Christmas came and went and we were really getting on quite well, it soon became apparent that she liked loves and cuddles much more than she did her food, in fact she stopped eating and started to just sit at the window crying for some attention. She soon became ill, and I had to make a decision whether or not to bring her inside,I really didn't want to as its not very long since I lost my special cat Nelson to feline aids, anyway she took a turn for the worse and I knew she would die if I didn't bring her in. So in she came, it has taken three weeks but she has now almost fully recovered and she has decided that she definitely likes being an inside cat. So watch this space I'll keep you informed of her progress and post a picture of FUDGE the new kitten in my life. |

Well we are at the end of another very bright and sunny day here in Westray, we have had quite a few bonny days. Who knows maybe spring is just around the corner, all in all we can't complain we haven't had too bad a winter so far. At the end of last summer I planted out six lavateria plants that I had grown from cuttings, I don't know why I didn't think of planting them out sooner (brains deteriorating maybe) Anyway they have survived so far and have even got lots of new foliage growing, I also planted 150 daffodil bulbs in between them, they are also poking up their little heads so I'm feeling pretty happy it will be lovely when they are all in flower. I've just ordered all my veggie seeds online as well so feeling very springy! Last year I used seeds that came in a paper tape, I would recommend them they worked out a treat. No fiddly little seeds to try and separate with my podgy fingers, just lay out the tape in your trench cover with soil and hey presto perfectly spaced veggies, so needless to say they are what I've ordered again. |

Happy New Year to one and all, hope its happy ans prosperous for you. We had a very quiet and peaceful christmas, what I call a good christmas. Tree has come down today so that's it all over, need to cut down on goodies and rich meals. Even Spot the dog needs to go on a diet, he looks like a jam roly poly! little rolls of fat around his neck and his collar is a little too close fitting.
We have a real good run of lovely fine weather here in Westray, frosty and cold but very clear and no wind at all. This morning it looks like it's all change though, quite dark and overcast and a little rain but no significant wind. |
