Phew! What a Weekend Print E-mail
Monday, 27 October 2008 00:00

Well we've just had one heck of a weekend.

For the first time since we've moved here we've really felt as though we live on a small island.

It started on Friday with pretty spectacularly bad weather, very windy (although to be fair not the worst I've seen) but also thunder and lightning, which we don't get much of. In fact lots of thunder and lightning.

Talking to local people it was as bad as they have seen in many a year.

Yippee! New Fibre Optic Cable to Orkney Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 August 2008 12:41

I read with interest a report in the paper about the installation of a new fibre optic cable from mainland Scotland to Orkney, to bring the BT 21st Century Network to Orkney.

This brings the promise of city exchange performance to even remote exchanges.

Bring it on I say!

Once operational this will be ideal for people such as myself working Internet based businesses from the outer islands.

I truly believe that this type of "homeworking" could be a real growth area for Orkney given the right telecommunications infrastrucure.

Wow how's that for techno waffle...

Mini Heat Wave Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 August 2008 12:30

Well it has been another cracker of a week weather wise, altough it looks to be on the turn now.

According to the paper Orkney has enjoyed a mini heatwave with Orcadians flocking to the beaches to enjoy temperatures approaching 20 degrees.

Don't laugh! That's warm for us.

But seriously, I know our daughters living in the Midlands think that 's cold, but personally I've found it a bit uncomfortable. We've been sleeping with the windows open the duvet at the bottom of the bed most of the week. How ridiculous is that in Orkney!

Regatta Weekend Print E-mail
Monday, 28 July 2008 07:43
regatta1It was the annual Regatta this weekend and the weather played nicely for us, nice sunny day with a fresh breeze.

Very lucky as the day after was a real pea souper, with heavy mist and no wind to speak of.

The Regatta is organised by the local sailing club with proceeds from the various stalls going to the RNLI.

As I walked round the harbour looking at the assembled yachts that visit for the event, it is clear there is some money about, somewhere. This year there were even two quite large cruisers.

regatta2Of course there were also lots and lots of little dinghies and skiffs, as that is what the races are all about.

There were some pipers to provide entertainment for the "crowds". I say crowds in inverted commas because although busy by Westray standards there is of course never the sort of numbers that you would see at a similar mainland event. Which, for me, is nice.

Good, fun day, with a dance in the evening.

Roof Testing Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 July 2008 09:57

Well, what a change in weather from my last post!

It's turned seriously wet and windy. We've sure had some rain over the last 24 hours!

My roof work (see post on 13th July) has certainly been well and truly tested. It's holding it's own at the moment although, as per my earlier post, the real test will be how long it lasts.

So the weather has been horrid, but it is perversely nice to sit in a cosy warm (lit the open fire) little house with the wind and the rain bashing the outside.

Perfect day to knuckle down and do some paying work in the office I think.
