Well another lovely weekend here in Westray, so Saturday we had a BBQ. Phill did the cooking and we chatted and did crosswords.
Both doors were open and something unusual fluttered in.Watching it to make sure Spot (our little dog) didn't try to eat it!
It found the sweet peas and was hovering over them so I got up for a closer look as I thought it was a humming bird. I was so excited, it looked like one so Phill and Gareth came for a look, yes it's a humming bird I cried!
Phill said no it's a moth its got feelers. So off he went for the camera, unfortunately it had gone by the time he got back.
We went to look it up on the Internet, we were both right in a way as it turned out to be a humming bird hawk moth.
How special was that, apparently they rarely come as far north as Orkney. What a real treat to see something like that in our garden room here in Westray |

Weekends Changeable Weather |

As usuall after feeding cats and dogs I made my morning cuppa and then checked the outside temperature, Saturday morning 8.15am and the temps reading 23.6 degrees Celsius. That can't be right re-check it and its now 23.8! So I take myself out into the garage and garden room and yes it really is that warm, shocked and stunned at that heat so early in the morning, so I decided to make the most of it and got beds stripped and washing machine doing several lots, to be honest it is far too warm to work or even sit in the garden room but I did get lots of little jobs done in and around the house. Even the cats think it's too warm, they are both chilling out inside on the clean bed.
Sunday morning and it couldn't be more different, very wet and extremely windy, gusting up to gale force. But then this is Westray where you can experience all four season in one day let alone one weekend! So Sunday was another inside day, lots of knitting and crosswords to be done.
After supper the heavens opened good and proper boy did it rain. Our little drip over the door suddenly turned into a gusher, really it was like someone had turned a tap on. It has never in seven years come through like that, so next sunny day we will be on the roof as there must be a crater opened up. |

Windy Days |

Quite a blustery windy day today, and heavy rain showers. I like it though, the garden could use a good drink and I don't have to make excuses so I can stay in and catch up on inside jobs, yes today I have made yet more raspberry jam and been catching up on my knitting and just resting up a bit.
One of our first baby blackbirds, now a juvenile is still coming back at night time to roost in the garden room. She is lovely, still got quite a speckled breast a lovely chocolate colour and not too timid. The last of this brood has finally fledged, but it didn't want to go. Mum came for several days after the others had gone and called and cajoled it. It's nice to know they are staying quite close by, I always keep an eye out for them. |

AN EXTRA ten council houses are to be built in Finstown following the Scottish Government announcement that £300,000 of funding has been available for council housing in Orkney.
The new cash builds on last year's initial two rounds of Scottish Government 'kick-start' funding for housing.

Been into town today, the dogs had to have their annual checkup and booster injections. Spot the smaller dog got us "done".Since being castrated last year he has turned into a little dumpling. So strict rations and definitely no more treats, so it will be hard when he turns those big brown eyes on us.
While away in town the birds have been in and raided the raspberries, luckily I had been out and picked most of them this morning, soon be jam making again!
I had a look at my baby birds when we got back and it looks like there is only one that hasn't flown the coop yet, he's so cute another little round dumpling with no tail yet. |
