Bonny Day - Dissapointing News Print E-mail

Bonny Day
What a bonny day in Westray today. I think we've lived here long enough to use bonny Innocent

Had a little drive round the island, visited all the the shops (all three of them) got various bits and bobs and decided to have a barbeque.

Relaxed in the garden room and watched a couple of ships sail over the horizon. fed our faces, drank some wine and generally had a very relaxing and pleasant afternoon.

Super.

Disappointing News
To set the scene I need to explain how larger items get to Westray.

Couriered items get delivered to a warehouse in Kirkwall and a local (Westray) haulier picks them up from there and brings them over to Westray. He will then bring them out to the final address. This last leg can sometimes get delayed as he can only be in one place at once. It is not unusual therefore for people to go down to the warehouse and collect their own items.

Similarly, and for me this is where the system really comes into its own. If one wants an item from a shop on Orkney mainland, say in Kirkwall, virtually all of them are quite happy to take payment by credit/debit card (or account) and drop the item/s round to the main warehouse, where again it is picked up by the local haulier (who will of course now charge for this collection).

Super duper. One rings the Kirkwall shop, orders the items and they just arrive in our local warehouse where thay can be collected.

Crime is very low in Orkney and just about non existent on Westray so the warehouse just  sits open all day and people help themselves to what is theirs.

The first Christmas that we were here we were just amazed at this Santas Grotto full of goodies for Christmas (booze, toys, computers etc) and everyone just taking what was theirs.

Wouldn't have worked for five seconds where we used to live.

I'm  sure by now you can guess where I'm going with this.

I've passed a couple of times lately and it has been all locked up. We had some stuff due that we'd ordered so while we were out and about this morning we called to see if our stuff had arrived. I had to ask the owner to open the warehouse and asked him why it was locked up now. As I feared there had been a couple of items gone missing.Frown

I was crushed! What a disappointement that we seem to be "catching up" with mainland UK.

The worst is, and I risk being pilloried for this, one can't help but think "bloody incomers". If I think that, and I am one, you know others have to be!

Sad, sad, sad.

P.S.
I did toy with whether or not I should post this. But then thought it better to "tell it how it is".

The Annual Roof Job Print E-mail
Sunday, 13 July 2008 00:00

Well it's that time of year I have to start on my annual roof paint. Cry

linkshouseAs you can see from the pic our house is a very old croft style house with a stone roof. The house its self is very solid with nearly two foot thick walls and aforementioned stone roof.

The roof is composed of stone slabs, some nearly a metre square and I think this is where the problem starts. Because of the size of these slabs the amount that they expand and contract with the changes in temperature is enough to constantly crack the pointing where these slabs/tiles overlap. This leads to minor leaks. Nothing really serious and watching the news over the last couple of years, one or two buckets in strategic places is nothing compared to what some have had to put up with up and down the country with flooding as widespread as it has been.

Some time in the past (at least 8 - 10 years ago) the roof was painted. So I thought we'll give it a whirl and duly applied a coat of proprietary roof paint. Voila! no leaks. Job done.Laughing

That was three years ago, and every year by summer, you'd barely know that the roof had been painted.Frown  I suppose being this close to the sea we're constantly blasted by salt and sand, and it just gets worn away.

So each year it's on with another coat. I have considered a new roof, but I would really like to keep the original. Oh, and it's too expensive. You can by a lot of paint for the cost of a new roof!

So this year I'm on my third make of roof paint and we'll see how this one fairs.

Wish me luck...

Site makeover, Classified Ads and Test Drive Orkney Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 July 2008 00:00

People that visit this web site regularly will have noticed that it's undergone a bit of a makeover, by and large cosmetic with the addition of a bit of colour and some pictures. I've also added several Google videos that are very relevant to those considering a move to Orkney.

More major changes are the addition of this blog plus the addition of classified ads to the Housing section of the website. I didn't want to provide classified ads in a general sense, but felt that ads that related direclty to moving to Orkney may be of use to those considering a move., hence the focus on housing/property.

I have emailed all the Orkney estate agents offering free ad placement through 2008. the same offer is open to anyone with a property for sale or to rent. Just drop me an email with details and a few pictures if available (no more than four please) and I'll add it to the classified ads listing. By default the ads stay in place for 30 days, but you can always resubmit them again after that.

Andrew Sales of Orkney Property Sales has been the first to take up this offer, but also of particular interest in the context of moving to Orkney is his new website Test Drive Island Life: Orkney (http://orkneytheplacetobe.co.uk).

This site is dedicated to putting people considering a move to orkney in touch with places that can provide medium to long term lets allowing people to "Test Drive Island Life" before burning any bridges. What a great idea, wish I'd thought of that. Wait, I did! (see Home Page). Wish I'd done that... Anyway, good luck to Andrew with this new venture.

New Porch Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 July 2008 00:00
porchHello all, just thought I would tell you about my new porch, yes PORCH not Porsche!  pretty boring to some I suppose, but as you can see from the picture opposite, heaven to Spot the dog and myself.

In fact it's so good we've nicknamed it the "Pleasure Dome".

It is so nice to be able to sit and watch the bunnies that are nibbling the grass out of  one window, and boats hauling creels in the bay out of the other window.

rabbitSometimes we see a large ship on the horizon going who knows where.

The only problem with this new porch is it is somewhat soporific sitting here watching life pass by! but as you can see Spot doesn't mind he just gives in and sleeps, and sleeps, and....

It's so long since I've been in my lounge I've forgotten what it looks like.

Oh the pace of life, must go and make a cup of tea.

Praise for service from Frozen Food Centre Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 00:00

Credit where its due...

We also did a spot of shopping at the Frozen Food Centre in bridge street. It had turned quite warm and we were bit early to be driving round with frozen food in the boot until our ferry later on, so asked if we could leave our purchases there and pick them up later.

They said of course we could and that they would keep them in the back for us.

We went to collect them just before going to catch our ferry and they had been packed in a box tied up and labelled with our name ready for collection. All organized and effiicient. Although we hadn't realised at the time I guess they must do this all the time.

When we got home and unpacked the box, the contents had been wrapped in lots of newspapers to help keep them cold.

What super service Smile

We'll definitely shop there again.
