Digger Print E-mail

Well the boy has hired a small digger for the weekend, as we have lots of big stones and other big bits that need moving.

He has made a grand job of tidying between the two wings of the house, and he has leveled it all off, and has even had time to do round the front of the house. I couldn't get round that way with my sticks, now it's an easy walk, well done that boy!

It's a job that has needed doing for a while, but really hard work with a wheelbarrow. The digger has made it alot easier, and the boy has had great fun playing at Bob the Builder!

That's another job to cross off the list, next we need to tackle the roof again before going into the winter.

Living here is wonderful, but the elements wreak havoc with the old cottage roof, but thats life on a little island in the Atlantic ocean.

Its been a while again since I last wrote, I don't know where the time goes.

I've been tidying up in the garden room, and noticed the grapes are turning purple! Wow not green grapes at all.  So had a read up and found out I needed to remove the leaves of the vine so the sun can get to the berries to ripen them. Got my son on doing that, so sun is shining on them now, we'll soon be eating Westray grown grapes who would of thought it.

But then we had some friends called round last week to ask if I would like some fruit as they had plenty, so yes please! My word when they opened the boot boxes of peaches, apricots plums and apples all grown locally in a polytunnel.

So, I've been making jam again! very nice indeed.

It's been a wee while since I last wrote, been busy with the extra cats, and then we got a phone call from our daughter to say they would be arriving the following day!

That got us into a flat spin! Where are we going to put three extra people, the boy is already sleeping on the settee as we are going to turn one of attached extensions into a room for him.

Oh what a week we had cats kids and grown ups everywhere, cats think wow more people to scrag and more chance of escaping through left open doors.

Visitors have left now after eight days, so we are trying to get back to normal, but the kittens are doing there best to turn the house upside down, and I have to say they are doing a pretty good job of it. They are into everything - knocking over anything they can, playing catch me if you can racing up the curtains and jumping off onto the telly.

Cat Print E-mail

Been rather busy last few days, taken in a cat and kittens, who would believe two little kittens and a cat could make so much extra work!

I seem to be constantly cleaning up the cat tray or feeding them. Oh and it's war with the dogs, the dogs don't mind but oh boy the cats certainly do, especially the mummy cat.

The border collie got it big time off mummy she really flew at the poor dog and didn't want to let go, needless to say Patches (dog) won't come down the lounge now. In fact she has taken to hiding way down in the boiler room well away from everything so she can't be got at by kittens or mummy.

The fun has just begun as I haven't introduced my house cats to them yet so it looks like I'm in for a busy time ahead.

Weather and grapes Print E-mail

Had a real odd mixture of weather the last few days, I know they say you can experience all four seasons in one day here in Orkney. But how about three all at the same time?

Well thats how it seemed on Friday. I was pottering in the garden room and it was lovely and sunny, then the heavens opened and we had very heavy rain, yet the sun was still shining and then the wind picked up and was blowing a gale, stranger still was it was sunny out of one window and positively grey out of the other. A very strange sort of day.

I was glad my gardening was all in the garden room.

I have to report on my grapes now, what I thought were grapes turned out to be flower buds. Which in turn have now turned into the genuine thing, GRAPES. They are slightly bigger than giant peas at this time, I'm giving them lots to drink and they are swelling nicely.

Not wishing the summer away but I am looking forward to Autumn to harvest them, there are about thirty bunches so if they all grow big and fat and juicy we will be alright, can you make grape jam I wonder! Yes I know about wine, but it's too fiddly.
